Birth Mother Process

Step 1

The initial step to the birth mother process is spent considering the option of adoption – facing an unplanned pregnancy often will encourage a woman to evaluate her situation and her alternatives. Determining if adoption is the right choice for you and your baby, it is important to ask yourself some questions and answer them honestly:

  • Is this a time in your life that you are not ready to parent or already have children and are having trouble making ends meet?
  • Do you have a strong support system in place if you choose to parent?
  • What part with the biological father play in this plan?

Step 2

Now that you have made the decision to pursue an adoption plan, it is important to connect with people who understand your situation and that you are comfortable talking with and working with. Sometimes people just “click” and sometimes they don’t. Make sure you explore various places to determine who you feel you can most easily work with, because these people will be a part of your life for a while – not just during the pregnancy and process as a birth mother, but after, while you maintain contact with your adoptive family.

If Beacon House Adoption Services is right for you, we will assign you a case manager and also put you in touch with our Domestic Adoption Coordinator. Gathering certain information about you and your current situation will help us put together a picture of your needs while you are in the birth mother process. This will enable us to establish how you can be helped during your pregnancy. Together you will move to Step 3 and you can choose a family.

Step 3

Now it is time to choose the family that you feel will provide the best choice for your child. You will need to think about the kind of family that might complete your vision

  • traditional married couple
  • single parent
  • same sex couple
  • In each case, these parents may or may not already have children who may or may not already be adopted by them. That is something to consider – siblings or not?

Another thing to consider is where the family you choose falls on the spectrum of semi-open adoption – do you want to meet them? Then make sure you choose a family that also wants to meet you. What level of ongoing contact and for how long do you want that contact? Let’s make sure that the family has the same ideas so that there are no misunderstandings or hurt feelings later.

Step 4

Communicate your vision for an adoptive family to your case manager, and she and the Domestic Adoption Coordinator will provide you with profiles to view that meet your criteria. We have many families waiting to adopt so we are sure you can find one you feel will be the right choice.

Step 5

Once the choice and the match is made, your case manager will work with you to ensure you will receive medical care as well as arranging to remain in contact with you on a regular basis. We will work out your expenses and your living situation if necessary (for example if you need to move).

We will be in contact with your physician, but it will be up to you to discuss the adoption plan with him/her. The same is true of the hospital – we can put you in touch with the correct person, but you will decide how and when to advise them of your adoption plan.
