Tips for Transracial Adoptive Families

Parenting a child can be challenging, adding the complex issues of race requires transracial adoptive families to have a greater understanding of diversity and culture.  Transracial Adoptive Parents have to be prepared to deal with racial stereotypes and intrusive questions, and to teach their children how to navigate them. Tips for transracial adoptive families include:

 

Read books about transracial adoption.

Take the initiative to learn about the child’s culture or heritage.

Incorporate your child’s heritage into your own family customs and activities.

Interact with people and children of the child’s race/ ethnicity.

Send your child to a culturally diverse school.

Find mentors and role models.

Openly discuss racism.

Educate your extended family and friends.
